Sergio Germano's 2014 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba is a surprisingly generous entry-level Barolo, especially within the context of the year. Wild cherry, plum, smoke, leather, orange peel, licorice and game all fill out the wine's ample frame. Rich, deep and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2014 is one of the surprises of the vintage in its peer group. I very much like the precision here. Drink it over the next handful of years.

The 2014 Barolo is uneven in terms of aromas, but the bouquet is clean (unlike the Barolo Cerretta from the same vintage). I will add, however, that the fruit tastes very ripe here, and this comes as a surprise given the relatively cooler conditions of the vintage. This wine offers an assembly of dried raspberries or blueberries with dark spice, smoke and tar. There is an awkward moment of bitterness on the close that also comes quite suddenly. Some 10,000 bottles were produced.

Serralunga d’Alba. Cask sample – will be bottled in December 2017. Total skin maceration of 20 days, and 50% aged for 24 months aged in casks of 20 hl (French and Slavonia) and 50% in old barriques and tonneaux. Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Very pretty, gentle but pronounced cherry and raspberry fruit on the nose. Hint of nutmeg. Gentle fresh fruit with a fine tannic crunch on the finish. Super-elegant and fresh. (WS)
