Score 85/100 · Drink 2010-2015, Mark Squires, Feb 2010

The 2001 WHITE is a blend of Obaideh and Merwah, fermented in French oak, aged for 9 months and late released in 2008. This is a lot cleaner and more alive than the 2000 reviewed this issue. It is a wine that has some body, good acidity and appealing texture, hints of caramel and dates, even if underneath it promises to oxidize soon. It is stern and a little brooding. It should last a good while, but if you want to drink it before it oxidizes, drink it in the immediate future. Drink now-2015. Musar is one of the Middle East’s iconic wineries, making wines that are rarely “by the numbers” correct, but often distinctive. Over the years, I’ve loved some and disliked others, but I’ve always found them fascinating. Their “flaws” will not make them universally loved, with many being turned off for one reason or another (such as the barnyard and funk that often accompanies them). Those who do like their style and character will be, and have been, enthralled by ageworthy wines coming from an unlikely location. Importer: Broadbent Selections, San Francisco, Ca.; (415) 931-1725.
