The virtually perfect 2003 Syrah Piggott Range is displaying far more character, depth, and potential out of bottle than it did from barrel. The most backward, tannic, and muscular of the 2003 Syrahs, it possesses an inky/blue/black/purple color, incredibly full body, monster tannins, huge concentration, and a striking minerality with all the blackberry, blueberry, and peppery characteristics one expects in a top-notch Syrah. Dense, saturated ruby. Deep, rich scents of dark berries, sweet tobacco, licorice and musky, dark cherry. Richly concentrated, inky and imploded in the mouth, with brooding flavors of kirsch, coffee liqueur, candied violet and fruitcake. Painfully young today, finishing with fresh acids and a bitter note of cherry pit. There superb and very ripe material here.
