Showing bold intensity, thick lines and lasting determination, the 2012 Barolo Brunate lives up to the expectations of this grand cru vineyard site in Barolo. On first inspection, there are some ripe fruit tones of blackberry preserves and cherry liqueur. They are well contained, however. To the palate, the wine is shapely and generous in terms of its volume.

A dark, muscular wine, the 2012 Barolo Le Brunate hits the palate with waves of fruit, tannin and acidity. The 2012 is going to need at least a few years to settle down post bottling, as the elements are still a bit disjointed. Still, the wine's power and overall intensity are both commendable. Suggestions of rose petal, cedar, iron, mint and smoke shape the finish. Today, the 2012 is austere and unyielding. Readers need to be in it for the long haul.
Barolo. Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Cool, lifted sweet and sour cherry nose. Light cherry palate with gripping tannins. There is some aromatic development, but the whole is a little bit spindly. Drink now. (WS)
