Score 91/100 · Drink 2014-2017, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Feb 2014

Offering up a beautiful bouquet of sweet red cherries, rose petal, tar and licorice (dare I say, Nebbiolo like), the 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Boisrenard is medium to full-bodied, nicely focused and polished on the palate, with silky, fine tannin and mid-weight flavors and texture. A blend of the 13 permitted red varieties that spent 18 months in 1-5-year-old smaller barrels, it still shows hints of vanilla and spice, yet has wonderful fruit, good texture and plenty of length. Enjoy it over the coming couple of years. Owners Frederic and Daniel Coulon made solid wines (particularly their whites) in 2004. Looking at the reds, their top cuvee (Boisrenard) still shows hints of its oak elevage (which I don’t think will ever completely disappear), yet stays pure, balanced and very drinkable. Both it and the traditional cuvee are medium-bodied, elegant efforts to drink over the coming couple of years.

Wow, stunning and unique nose of black currant, tobacco and oak. Medium bodied with a clean, pure feel and masses of fine grained tannins on the finish.

Dense ruby. Explosive cherry and spicy oak aromas, with licorice and vanilla accents. Broad, deep and sweet, with a candied quality to the dark fruit flavors. Weighty and sweet on the finish, with a repeating oak spice component and a lush impression of kirsch This has great fruit but I wonder what it would be like without so much oak?

Inky violet color. Explosively aromatic nose shows exotic oak spice, ripe plum, candied violet and rich tobacco. Thick and sappy, with strong oak spice notes accenting juicy plum jam and ripe cherry/berry flavors. Youthfully tannic and remarkably ripe on the finish; really clings to the palate. Fans of intensely oaky wines will no doubt score this higher than I do today.
