Score 90/100 · Drink 2004-2018, Robert Parker, Feb 2004

From a top vintage, the serious, dense, dark ruby/purple-colored 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape (48% Grenache, 26% Syrah, 18% Mourvedre, 6% Cinsault, and the rest miscellaneous varietals) exhibits a peppery, fragrant nose. Aged 60% in neutral wood foudres and 40% in small casks, it possesses plenty of black currant and cherry fruit intermixed with hints of licorice and dried herbs, a full-bodied texture, and a long, rich, surprisingly up-front personality. It should be drunk over the next 12-14 years. Importer: Clicquot Imports, New York, NY; tel. (212) 888-7575
