Candied orange peel, spice, mint and a touch of French oak give the wine its exotic feel. Even so, the Edward James remains medium in body. This is a strong showing.

Apricot pit, flowers, honey and mint are all nicely delineated in the glass, while veins of salinity give the wine a little more energy than normal.

Paul Hobbs is one of California wine’s biggest names. Twice named Wine Personality of the Year by Robert Parker, he joined Robert Mondavi in 1977, worked at Opus One and Simi before setting up his eponymous winery in 1991.
