The 2019 Red Blend Variation One, 70% Syrah and 30% Merlot from Hudson, is a total knock-out. The combination of Syrah savoriness and Merlot plushness yields a wine of tremendous distinction and character. Dark leather, smoke, tobacco, chocolate, black pepper, licorice and game build as this strikingly expressive, captivating wine opens over time. This huge, potent wine needs time. Impressive.
Composed of 70% Syrah and 30% Merlot, the 2019 Variation One (Syrah / Merlot) has a deep garnet-purple color and is a little reduced to begin, opening out to notes of plum preserves and baked blackberries with hints of tar, rubber and black pepper, plus a waft of smoked meats. Full-bodied, concentrated and spicy, it delivers ripe, rounded tannins and a long, pepper-laced finish.
The 2019 Variation One is another captivating wine in this range. Here, the Syrah has such a strong imprint. Savory herbs, inky dark fruit, wild herbs, game, iron and scorched earth all come alive in the glass. The 2019 is simply an exciting, alluring Napa Valley red. Savor it over the next 10-15 years.
