The 2001 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a potent, brooding wine. The 2001 has quite a bit of fruit density, but it is also mature. Dark fruit, worn-in leather, tobacco and cedar are all signatures of a wine that is fully fledged. There is a touch of low-level brett, something that is quite common in this vintage.

There are 2,500 cases of this 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon fashioned by winemaker Tony Soter from several sub-appellations (most notably Rutherford, St. Helena, Oakville and Calistoga). A blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc aged in French oak, this beauty reveals aromas of sweet graphite, black currants, coffee and vanillin. Full-bodied with loads of pure red and black fruits, Rutherford dust and loamy soil character, lots of glycerin and a medium to full-bodied finish, it can be enjoyed now or cellared for another decade. The blockbuster 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa came from two sources, the Morisoli Vineyard in St. Helena and the Cohn Vineyard in Rutherford (the source for the famous Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon). This fabulous, dense ruby/purple wine is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. It exhibits a deep creme de cassis nose with hints of charcoal, graphite and spring flowers. Full-bodied, rich and youthful, it appears to have at least 20 years of life left in it. This is a wine that clearly flew under the radar, and if it can still be found and the provenance is excellent, it is definitely a big-time buy. (RP)

Sweet aromas of flowers, blueberries, black currants, licorice and smoky oak emerge from this full-bodied, opulent Cabernet Sauvignon. While close to full maturity, it should continue to provide enjoyment for 12-15 more years. Full-bodied, vibrant and vigorously concentrated with abundant texture and richness, this beautiful 2001 is still an adolescent. Tel. (877) 586-9361
