Tasting notes
Even though it is brilliant, it is hard to get excited over the $90 2002 Zinfandel Chookshed. There are only 150 cases of this classic Zinfandel made in a Turleyesque style. Loads of peppery, briery fruit, color, extract, and richness emerge from this supple, voluptuous Zinfandel. Drink it over the next 3-4 years. (from 35-year-old vines; aged in new French and American barrels) Full ruby-red. Pungent aromas of raw berries, mocha, baking spices, fresh herbs and oak. Supersweet and thick but leavened by strong acids and lifted by mint and weedy notes. A fruit bomb of a zinfandel, with the green notes often shown by this variety, which is characterized by uneven ripening even within clusters. Finishes with an intriguing quality and very sweet tannins. This would be a perfect accompaniment to blue cheese. Idiosyncratic wine, but it works for me.
