Ricardo and Alvaro Palacios started this joint venture in 1999, and their vineyards are located in the municipality of Corullón in the mountains to the west of Bierzo. The vines here date back 50, 75 and even 90 years in some plots, and are worked on biodynamic principles. The grapes were hand-harvested between the 14th September and 19th October 2007 and partially destemmed prior to fermentation in small open wooden vats. Maceration lasted 52 days, and malolactic fermentation occurred spontaneously in oak vats. The wine was aged for 16 months in new French oak barrels, and there was no fining, cold stabilisation, or filtration prior to bottling. Wow! Great to have this on a high street near you!!! Dark blackish purple. But fewer than 23,000 bottles were filled… Sumptuous nose – overripe mulberries? Then lovely freshness and minerals on the palate. This is the sort of wine I could drink all night!!! It's alive. Not at all heavy. So flattering. The vineyard is all. Long………. Bravissimo! (JR)

Broad and fresh and burgundian (with fruit!). Just wonderful, all across the palate. Up and down. (JR)

14 little parcels for 22,000 bottles. Organic and 11 months in barrels. Deep and racy and correct but a bit sweeter than many Bierzos. Very correct, dry finish. (JR)

The purple-colored 2007 Corullon was aged in 80% new French oak. It displays an expressive perfume of smoke, mineral, lavender, black cherry, and black raspberry. Dense, layered, and plush on the palate, it has enough fine-grained tannin to blossom for another 2-3 years. This lengthy effort will deliver prime drinking from 2012 to 2019. Descendientes de Jose Palacios was founded in 1998 by Alvaro Palacios. It has steep hillside vineyards ranging in age from 60-100 years planted to 100% Mencia, the indigenous grape of cool-climate Bierzo. The vineyards are biodynamically farmed and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration. Importer: The Rare Wine Company, Sonoma, CA; tel. (707) 996-4484
