Very tame for a grand cru. Takes time to open in the glass. Entirely soft and rounded. With coaxing, there is more expression from the black fruit and dark chocolate. There's quite a lot of density on the finish, after such an unassuming start. Even so, seems quiet overall. (RH)

(aged in 80% new oak; this has a pH around 3.6, which is typical of these 2016s): Bright medium red. Lovely violet lift to the subdued aromas of black cherry and minerals. Sweeter and richer than the Echézeaux, but still restrained in the middle palate, offering notes of spicy red berries, flowers and minerals. The above wine is more accessible today, but this wine impresses with its explosive, mounting peacock's tail of a finish, which stains the finish and lingers without any loss of energy. This wine is built for a graceful evolution in the bottle but it's also amazingly showy today.

Dark red. More brooding and dark on the nose than the Echézeaux but still rather open-knit in the context of this grand cru. Then juicier and more tightly wound on the palate, showing intriguing smoky minerality and lovely inner-mouth lift. The Echézeaux may be more consistent in its texture from start to finish but this more restrained, feminine grand cru is more lacy and complex. Quite discreet in the mid-palate, it opens out and expands on the finish.
