Brilliant ruby-red. Spicy, mineral-tinged aromas of raspberry, boysenberry and candied flowers. Shows impressive energy and depth to its sweet red and dark berry flavors complicated by licorice and spicecake. Silky and seamless in texture, finishing with strong thrust and a touch of succulent herbs.

Foillard’s 2011 Morgon Cuvee Corcelette – issuing from octogenarian vines on sandstone – initially displays a slightly dulling aromatic overtone I associate with many exceedingly low-sulfur bottlings, but there are also intimations of black raspberry shadowed by its distilled counterpart; leather; and shoe polish. Texturally soothing and brimming with ripe, juicy fruit, it finishes with mouthwatering savor of lightly salted meat stock. This may just need a bit more time in the bottle, and if you have a cool cellar it should be worth taking a chance on through 2016. Imported by Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, Berkeley, CA; tel.
