Booker’s 2010 My Favorite Neighbor bursts from the glass with a heady array of blueberries, dark cherries, spices, violets, mint and licorice. The 2010 stands out for its huge fruit and impeccable balance. Proprietor Eric Jensen planned to give the wine a full 24 months in oak. This is another compelling wine full of promise. The blend is 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Petit Verdot and 23% Syrah. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018. Today, the wines are more polished than they have ever been. I have also included notes on the ‘22’ series of wines that spend a few extra months in barrel. The handful of 2011s I tasted were delicate, perfumed and quite pretty, but with less depth and structure than either the 2009s or the 2010s. One day, when the vineyards of Westside Paso Robles are fully understood, I have little doubt Booker will occupy a place at or near the top. The 2010 Booker Vineyard My Favorite Neighbor had also not been bottled at the time of this tasting. A blend of primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, it is a serious wine that possesses classic aromas of black fruits, graphite, bay leaf, and violet to go with a full-bodied, seriously structured palate. Incredibly fresh and focused, with masses of fine tannin, this nevertheless has a thrilling texture and loads of richness that carries through the finish. It will require 2-3 years of bottle age and drink well for over a decade.
