Mid to deep bright crimson. Fragrant and dry and delicate by California standards – more of a Dugat-Py by Burgundian standards. Very attractive direct black cherry fruit but not too heavy or sweet.  Was not utterly disgraced by the Tache 1999 and Mugnier Amoureuses served beforehand. Some slight greenness on the finish but very pretty. Tingle on the finish. (JR)

The 2009 Pinot Noir McDougall Ranch is richer, deeper and fleshier than the Falstaff. Exotic spices, tangerine, crushed flowers and red berries are some of the notes that wrap around the finish in this juicy, expansive Pinot. The finish reveals gorgeous depth and plenty of harmony. Kutch used 50% whole clusters and aged the wine 17 months in French oak barrels, 30% new.

Jamie Kutch left a career as a trader a few years ago to follow his dream to make wine. Since 2007 Kutch has changed his approach a bit in favor of wines made in a less opulent style than his earlier vintages. Tel. (917) 270-8180, www.kutchwines.com

Vivid ruby. Expansive, perfumed bouquet of candied red berries, rose oil, cinnamon and five-spice powder. Deep on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry and cherry-cola flavors and a late note of candied flowers. The finish repeats the spicy quality and lingers with very good clarity and sappiness. This is pretty seductive right now.
