Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. There is some under-ripeness here on Leroux’s Nuits St Georges Aux Thorey, which juts out from the brambly red berry fruit nose. It is nicely defined but herbaceous and leaner than expected. The palate is medium-bodied with a spicy/saline entry. I find a little heat on the mid-palate that rather disturbs the harmony on the finish. Perplexing.

Medium red. Blackberry, dark cherry, mocha and sexy chocolatey oak on the lightly saline nose. Supple and dry on the palate, with red berry, smoke and spice flavors given shape by well-integrated oak and acidity. Finishes with a light dusting of tannins and an herbal element. Not bad but could use more fruit sweetness.

Rich and dense on the nose. Very intense concentration – quite unusual for 2011. Extremely youthful. Very intense indeed! (JR)
