Tasting notes
The 1999 Clos Erasmus, a blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Syrah aged in 100% new French oak, was fashioned from yields of only one ton of fruit per acre. Its dark ruby/purple color is followed by an elegant perfume of pure, sweet black raspberries, currants, creosote, and minerals. It reveals complex flavors, tremendous purity, and a long finish with no hard edges. Drink it now and over the next 12-15 years. Importer: Eric Solomon, European Selections, Charlotte, NC; tel. (a 65/35 blend of grenache and cabernet sauvignon) Full medium ruby. Highly aromatic nose combines black cherry, currant, licorice, menthol and pepper, with hints of mocha and brown spices. Fat but firm, with impressive extract; its strong backbone gives this wine an elegance I've rarely found in past vintages. Finishes with substantial tongue-dusting tannins that avoid dryness. Not quite as ripe as the '98 but perhaps the most polished Erasmus vintage to date.
