Bright purple. Ripe cherry and blackberry scents are complemented by suggestions of licorice, candied flowers and black pepper. Appealingly sweet and unctuous on the palate, offering pliant cherry and dark berry preserve flavors that show impressive depth and a hint of florality that gains strength on the back half. Shows superb energy and dark fruit thrust on the clinging finish, which is framed by velvety, slow-building tannins. (made with 15% whole clusters; 15% new oak)

A disappointing sample, the 2018 Saint Joseph Lieu-Dit Paradis comes across as having a bit too much heavy, dead-fruit character. It's full-bodied and velvety, marked by plum, chocolate and licorice, so it has some tasty components, but it lacks the vibrancy it's shown in previous years.

Beautiful graphite, cassis, new leather, and spicy notes emerge from the 2018 Saint Joseph Lieu-Dit Paradis. It's medium to full-bodied, has beautiful depth of fruit, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It has all the right components, terrific balance, and enough underlying structure to warrant 2-4 years of bottle age. This tiny Northern Rhône estate continues to produce a colossal lineup of wines. While they pull from top estate terroirs around Hermitage and the Northern Rhône, they also have a large négoçiant line that’s loaded with values.

100% Syrah. Cask sample. Tasted blind. Proud oak scent on the nose. Succulent black fruit on the palate with an earthy, mossy note on the finish. Easy-drinking structure with plenty of fruit on the finish. (RH)
