The 1959 Laville Haut-Brion is a vintage I have not encountered before, but it's another to add to the canon of gifted 1959 Bordeaux. This was given plenty of aeration as it always requires maximum time between uncorking and drinking. It has a fabulously complex nose with peach skin, melted candle wax and baked popcorn. A slight underlying scent of grilled hazelnuts develops with time. The palate is beautifully balanced with a waxy texture, touches of Turkish Delight imparting a sense of exoticism on the smooth and utterly seductive finish. How I wish all mature, dry white Bordeaux could be the caliber of this Laville. Tasted at the Pomerol 1961 dinner in Hong Kong.
