Score 75/100 · Drink 2019, Neal Martin, Apr 2019

The 1988 Malartic-Lagravière comprises a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. It feels stewed and green on the nose, not a nice combination. The palate is chewy on the entry, savory and meaty but with little freshness and that is even before we broach the volatile finish. Poor, given the vintage. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Malartic-Lagravière.

The 1988 Malartic-Lagraviere is lean, austere, light-bodied, and too polite. A little excess would have been appreciated. Anticipated maturity: Now-2000. Last tasted 1/93
