Tasting notes
Good deep, bright red. Ripe aromas of currant, dark plum, loam, tobacco and menthol. Lush and fat on entry, then large-scaled and plush in the mouth, with a gamey, saline quality to the sweet fruit flavors. Slightly warm and on the soft, chunky side. Finishes with a broad dusting of tannins and good lingering sweetness.

Mid ruby. Tarry and rather severe. Very chewy and drying on the finish. Will probably blossom eventually. (JR)
The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Fornace emerges from a site next to Mastrojanni's Schiena d'Asino. The Fornace shows the warmth and breath of Castelnuovo in its dark fruit. Hints of licorice, mocha, tobacco, spices and leather develop in the glass as the wine opens up. This is an especially big, full-bodied Brunello with tons of depth. At times the alcohol is a bit noticeable, no doubt a reflection of the year in this southern part of Montalcino.

Riccardo Campinoti is one of the most promising young producers in Montalcino. With the 2007 vintage, Campinoti is unveiling two new single-vineyard Brunelli. It will be fascinating to see where Le Ragnaie goes in the coming years. The wines are full of promise. Importer: Vine Street Imports, Mt. Laurel, NJ; tel. (856) 840-8388
