The 2013 Pibran has a light, earthy bouquet whose lack of intensity is illuminated in following the superior 2012. It feels a little dour by comparison. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin and slightly rough-hewn, with black pepper toward the finish, which is actually better than you expect. It just lacks Pibran’s usual charm. Drink over the next three or four years. Tasted at the Pibran vertical at Château Pichon-Baron.

Another sleeper of the vintage from an unclassified growth in Pauillac, this wine is made by the same folks that turn out the great Pichon Longueville Baron. It exhibits a deep ruby/purple color and sweet, classic nose of creme de cassis, licorice and barbecue smoke. The wine is medium-bodied, shows an abundance of fruit, soft silky light tannins and just enough acidity to provide vibrancy and definition. Drink it over the next 6-9 years.

52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Merlot. 50% new oak. Tiniest hint of reduction, then rather luscious and succulent fruit that slides over the palate. Lovely soy note. Some toastiness to finish. (RH)
