The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Quintessence saw fully 40% new wood, and while that's a touch less than in previous years, it's one of the fleshier, richer wines in the range. Offering up aromas of almond, hazelnut, green apple and white flowers, it's medium to full-bodied, generously textural and succulent. As usual, it's a blend of Chalumeaux and La Garenne.

(a blend of Chalumeaux and Garenne, aging in 50% new oak): Bright light yellow. Sexy oak-spicy lift to the subtle aromas of nectarine and white peach, plus a captivating floral topnote. A step up in concentration of material over the foregoing wines but still a medium-bodied wine with very good precision. This will need time to absorb its oak element. Finishes dusty and lightly saline, with nicely integrated acidity and good length. Elsa Matrot noted that the Garenne fruit brings the acidity to this blend.
