Opaque ruby. Ripe dark berries, cherry, licorice and a hint of olive on the spice- and floral-inflected nose. Juicy bitter cherry, blueberry and candied licorice flavors become livelier and sweeter as the wine opens up. Dusty tannins add grip to a long, focused finish that leaves sappy dark fruit, espresso and cracked pepper notes behind.

The 2019 Côte Rotie Les Bécasses would be a great buy for readers looking to understand both the style of Chapoutier Côte Rôties as well as the style of the 2019 vintage. Medium-bodied, ripe, forward, and elegant, it has a solid perfume of dark raspberry fruits as well as spice box and dried flower notes. I love its tannins, it’s balanced, has good purity, and outstanding length. Drink it over the coming decade or so.
