Score 90/100 · Drink 2015-2019, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, May 2015

The 2004 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is the richest and most powerful of these wines. It is also the oakiest. A host of mocha, plum, chocolate, spice and leather notes wrap around the fruit, adding considerable darkness and intensity, neither of which are typical of this site, in my opinion. The 2004 is a pretty wine, but it needs to be enjoyed over the next few years. The decision to use more new oak because this is the most important wine in the range is unfortunate, as the site does not appear to be naturally suited to this approach.

The 2004 Rocche dell'Annunziata reveals a sweet, opulent texture with notes of roses, flowers, red cherries and toasted oak. Veglio gave the Rocche more new oak than his other Barolos in 2004 which gives this wine its additional sweetness and volume, but it has also left the wine with harder and dryer tannins.

Bright dark red. Pure, primary aromas of dark berries and black cherry. Densely packed, sweet and very young; quite fresh but a bit monolithic today and difficult to assess. Finishes firmly tannic, with a medicinal reserve.
