Sweet red cherries, flowers and mint are all woven together in the 2009 Etna Rosso Il Musmeci. The Musmeci is one of the most gracious, elegant and complete wines I taste from the Etna this year. It possesses breathtaking purity and delineation, with phenomenal balance and no sense of excess heaviness whatsoever. The 2009 will be a fascinating wine to follow over the next decade, give or take. The Musmeci is 95% Nerello Mascalese and 5% Nerello Cappuccio that spent 15 months in cask and tonneaux.

Rovittello. Aged in large oak casks and tonneaux for 16 months. 95% Nerello Mascalese, 5% Nerello Cappuccio . Looks a little like Pinot Noir with orange tinges on the rim. Pronounced concentrated and sweetly perfumed. Fluid and with a rich, sweet strawberry core. Loads of grainy tannins on the finish. Just a tiny bit bitter. Still has potential. (WS)
The estate-s flagship wine, the 2009 Etna Rosso Riserva Musmeci is always an elegant wine but this edition takes an extra long time to open in the glass. I-d suggest popping the cork six hours or more before serving. Fine nuances of dried cherry and cassis begin to appear with time and the wine finishes with ethereal tones of volcanic ash, cola and balsam herb. Grapes are sources from the Rovittello cru on the north face of Etna. Drink 2016-2026. Silvia Maestrelli is a leading lady of Etna wine.
