Tasting notes
Tempranillo, Cabernet and Merlot. The vineyard is located in La Horra village at 800 m elevation. 20 months' ageing in 200% new French oak barrels. Very pompous and obvious wine, clean oak is dominating the nose, with deep black fruit and lots of sweet spices such as vanilla, cinnamon and liquorice. Rich, concentrated and super-ripe palate but firm and grainy tannins. Dense and inky with a long ageing potential. This is an excessive wine reserved for those loving blockbuster style. (FC)

Bright purple. Potent smoke- and spice-accented black and blue fruit aromas are lifted and sharpened by an intense mineral quality, picking up sexy potpourri and incense nuances with aeration. Sweet, penetrating blackberry and cherry-cola flavors stain the palate, with licorice and mocha qualities adding depth. Rich yet lively and precise, finishing with outstanding energy and fine-grained tannins that fade into the wine's lush fruit. A big success for the vintage.
The 2011 Vina Sastre Pesus is produced from very old vineyards of Tempranillo blended with 10% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged for 18 months in 200% new oak (yes, the wine is aged in a new barrique and then racked to another new barrique!). As you can guess the aromas are dominated by notes extracted from the oak, vanilla, cinnamon, clove, black pepper, espresso coffee, smoke and ultra-ripe fruit. The palate reveals a true heavyweight, with plenty of extraction, oak tannins and alcohol, in an XXL size. A mammoth wine, for fans of the style. I don't know what to say about the price asked. Drink 2016-2022. This family winery was created in 1992 around their 30 hectares of vineyards and has grown to 70 hectares of vineyards today. They produce archetypal, powerful, highly extractive and heavily oaked reds. Importer: De Maison Selections, Chapel Hill, NC; tel. (919) 933-4245, www.demaisonselections.com
