Mid transparent ruby. Heady, tarry, dramatic nose. Sweet start. Already chock full of fun. Heady and herbal – like essence of a rather beguiling red vermouth! (JR)

Healthy-looking mid ruby with orange tinges. Very pretty kirsch and spice on the nose with hints of new oak. Great freshness and crunch, and lots of tannins to chew on. (WS)

The 2006 Barolo Cannubi presents a more delicate expression of Nebbiolo than the decidedly virile Costa Grimaldi. As it sits in the glass the wine displays wonderful inner perfume, with pretty suggestions of menthol, red berries and spices, all buttressed by silky tannins. Sweet, sensual and enveloping all the way, the Cannubi possesses superb poise and harmony.

Sweet, sensual and enveloping all the way, the Cannubi exudes poise, harmony and sheer class. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. Over the last few years Einaudi has settled into an approach that successfully combines elements of modern and traditional approaches. In 2006 the Nebbiolo harvest took place during the first half of October. The Barolos were fermented in stainless steel, and aged first in French oak and subsequently in larger, neutral casks. Einaudi is among the properties in Piedmont moving in a direction that increasingly favors large oak over small French oak barrels. Importer: Empson, USA, Alexandria, VA; tel. (703) 684-0900
