Germano's 2017 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba is a very pretty, gracious wine. Transparent and light on its feet, the 2017 nevertheless packs plenty of punch. Dried autumn leaves, spice, rose petal and sweet dried cherry all grace this sinewy, mid-weight Barolo. The 2017 offers plenty of complexity and quite a bit of character. It's a terrific wine in its peer group.

With some 9,500 bottles made, the Ettore Germano estate submits this wine as proof of its expertise in Serralunga d'Alba Nebbiolo. The 2017 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba reveals tight red fruit, with waxy cherry and cassis at the front. Those primary tones cede to spice, rusty iron, crushed stone, grilled herb and rosemary essence. The wine shows lots of dimension and a clear, linear style.

The 2017 Barolo Del Comune Di Serralunga D'Alba is noted by cinnamon, candied raspberry, mint, and fresh earth. There is a refreshing astringency up front, with cherry lozenge, medicinal herbs, and orange rind. Ripe, bright, and structured, it has a pleasant youthful energy that is welcome for drinking now or to hold 3-5 years and drink 2023-2036. Founded in 1856, Ettore Germano is a fourth-generation winery currently under the oversight of Sergio Germano. They have 10 hectares of holdings in Serralunga d’Alba and nine hectares in Ciglie in Alta Langa.

Serralunga d'Alba. 25 – 30 days on the skins, and no 'cappello sommerso' (submerged cap), just pumping over. 60% aged in large 25-hl oak cask and 40% in old barriques and tonneaux. Just mid ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Softly perfumed, generous red-fruit nose with hints of black pepper and dark spice. Plenty of juicy, supple sweet-sour cherry fruit with tasty, chewy tannins. Quite approachable and already a real treat. (WS)
