Score 16/20 · Drink 2023-2028, Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, Nov 2020

This property belonged to Jean-Philippe Janoueix until 2007, then to Silvio Denz until 2015. As of 2016, this wine 'will benefit from a completely adapted viticultural direction', their website tells me. They have preserved the original wine label with the Templars’ Cross, the historic symbol of the Pomerol and Lalande-de-Pomerol appellations. 78% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc on sandy, gravelly soil with clayish subsoil. Planting density: 6000 vines/ha. Average age of the vines: about 25 years. Aged 16 months in French oak barrels, 40% new and 60% second-use oak. Deep crimson. Fresher-smelling and more lifted than the Ch Moncets 2017, perhaps thanks to the higher percentage of Cab Franc. Plenty of rich, chewy fruit on the palate, still in thrall to its tannins but with an underlying freshness on the finish that should help it to age until the tannins recede. (JH)

The 2017 de Chambrun is a plump, perfumed Lalande de Pomerol to drink now and over the next few years, while the fruit remains vibrant and before some slightly vegetal undertones become too prominent.

The 2017 de Chambrun is perfumed and nicely lifted. Sweet raspberry and floral notes, along with mid-weight structure, give this Lalande de Pomerol much of its distinctive, gracious personality.

The 2017 Château Chambrun offers a darker, earthier style to its aromatics and is medium-bodied, moderately concentrated, yet focused and elegant on the palate.
