Poured from magnum at a retrospective tasting going back to 1999 held at Gramercy Tavern in NYC.  Smoky tobacco scents and black-cherry fruit feel surprisingly calm and elegant despite the youth of this wine; everything feels like it’s in its place already, the tannins firm but fine and balanced with fruit, the wine approachable now, even though it’s sure to age well over the next decade-plus. A cushion of fresh acidity, feels signature Brunello with its tobacco leaf, black tea, white truffles, crushed rose petals, vivid red fruits, lovely balance, no need to wait on this, get ready to share over a slowly unfolding meal.

The new release of this cuvée, the 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino pours a bright ruby/red hue and is expressive and fruitier at this early stage, with aromas of orange oils, grenadine, fresh flowers, and dried earth. Initially it seems to be a less complex wine, but it has a great deal of length and more nuanced crystalline purity. It offers a more immediate feel but will really benefit from at least another year or two in the cellar. Drink it over the coming 15 or so years.
