The 1977 Montrachet Grand Cru comes from an impeccable private cellar. It is surprisingly fresh on the nose with candle wax and lanolin scents, though it does not quite possess the brightness of the 1977 Corton-Charlemagne from Bonneau du Martray. The palate has a rounded entry and feels a little viscous. No, not a complex Montrachet by a long chalk, but it is pinned together by a fine line of acidity. With aeration, it does deteriorate with a mothball note beginning to dominate the aromatics, yet overall, a perfectly drinkable white Burgundy from a lamentable growing season. Tasted at the Petrus dinner at Hide restaurant in London.
