Tasting notes
The 2022 Cadet-Bon has turned out beautifully, evoking a complex, deep bouquet of cassis, mulberries, spices and flowers. Medium to full-bodied, enveloping and charming, it's tense and energetic with powdery tannins enhanced by a long, ethereal and perfumed finish. Perfectly balanced, this attractive wine, a blend of 85% Merlot (fermented with 8% whole bunches) and 15% Cabernet Franc, was matured for 14 months in a combination of 40% new barrels (225 liters and 500 liters), 52% used barrels and 8% amphorae.

The 2022 Château Cadet-Bon is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that was raised in 35% new oak. Its deep ruby/plum hue is followed by a spicy, complex Saint-Emilion offering lots of ripe red plum and mulled cherry fruit as well as notes of savory flowers, new leather, and loamy earth. It's beautifully balanced and has medium to full-bodied richness, ample mid-palate depth and concentration, and a beautiful finish. I love it even today, yet it has the depth and concentration to evolve for two decades. I was able to taste this on multiple occasions with consistent results.
The 2022 Cadet-Bon has a simple but not unattractive bouquet with blackberry, briar and light marine scents. The understated but well-defined nose leads to a medium-bodied palate with fleshy ripe tannins counterbalanced by a keen thread of acidity. Fleshy toward the finish, this should drink well after three or four years in bottle.
80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Cask sample. Lively crimson. Light but fresh and direct nose. Easy-peasy. Not trying desperately hard but a sprightly St-Émilion for early drinking with life and balance. (JR)
