Tasting notes
The 2019 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru has a leathery bouquet with plenty of red fruit and perhaps (again) Brettanomyces, although it lends a bit of “sauvage." The palate is well balanced with an edgy, quite citrus-driven opening. It doesn't quite flow like a top-drawer Volnay, and there is a little compactness toward the finish that should be remedied with time. But, I like the bitter twist on the finish, with plenty of sour cherry and salinity and that urges me back for another sip. This is hypothetically a very good Volnay besmirched by Brettanomyces that is noted almost unanimously by attendees. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is also very charming, wafting from the glass with scents of peonies, orange rind, cedar spices and subtle red berry fruit. Medium-bodied, lively and melting, with powdery tannins and succulent acids, it concludes with a melting finish.
The 2019 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru has the strictest, almost Pommard-like bouquet with the most mineralité of the quartet of Volnays tasted from Leroux. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, the two-thirds whole bunch fruit imparting black pepper and clove notes toward a finish that has an almost brittle texture. Excellent.
