Score 92/100 · Drink 2026-2032, Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous, Mar 2024

The 2021 Hermitage exhibits bright raspberry, red cherry, leafy shadings, cedarwood and violet traces. Polished and round, the 2021 engages the palate with great concentration and a juicy core of fruit. Checking in at 13.5% alcohol, it will benefit from two more years in bottle.

Exotic cherry and framboise as well as spring flowers, spice, and sappy herb notes all shine in the 2021 Hermitage from Michel Tardieu, one of the more concentrated, layered, textured 2021s in the lineup. With medium-bodied richness, ripe tannins, and a layered, ripe core of fruit, this beautiful Hermitage will continue drinking beautifully for another 10-15 years if well stored.

60-year-old vines in Début du Méal, Les Pierrelles, Les Diognières, La Croix. 100% destemmed. Aged for 12 months in new and one-year-old barrels then a further 12 months in foudre. Cask sample. Powerful liquorice nose – much heavier and meatier than the Côte Rôtie Vieilles Vignes. Then sweet with just a hint of oak evident. Needs a bit of time to lose that. Big and bold but as yet just ingredients rather than the finished wine. (JR)

80% Marsanne (vines aged over 50 years), 20% Roussanne (vines aged over 40 years). From Pierrelles, Beaume, Murets and La Croix. Aged for 12 months in new and one-year-old barrels, then a further 12 months in Stockinger foudre. Cask sample. Real honeysuckle nose. Floral top notes. Some sinewy raciness here – long and exciting. Should age well. Though it is already pretty lovely. More depth to it than the Condrieu 2021. (JR)
