Tasting notes
The Creation 2023 Walker Bay Chardonnay Reserve is a medium-plus white with orchard fruit, pastry cream and toasted almond. It undergoes 100% malolactic fermentation and matures in 30% new oak. In order to maintain acidity and freshness, a small percentage of the fruit (from 5% to 10%) is picked earlier than the rest. This wine and others may soon become part of the Hemel-En-Aarde Ridge appellation. This estate offers an amazing sensorial tasting menu that pairs its range of wines beautifully with creative cuisine.

Very, very idiosyncratic. A kind of 'husky' start: bran husk, cocoa husk, buckwheat and then it dazzles into resplendent lemon acidity, pomelo brightness and the tang-and-cream-and-zip of lemon-zested Greek yogurt. Caraway-seed texture. Really savoury and unusual. Compact with chalkiness on the finish. (TC)
The 2023 Chardonnay Creation Reserve was raised in around 30% new oak. It was blended in December and bottled in May, giving this cuvée a couple more months in tank. This has a very well-defined bouquet that’s much more mineral-driven than the Estate Chardonnay, revealing hints of chai and chamomile in the background. The palate is well balanced with lime, candied orange peel and lemon rind on the entry. I appreciate the texture of this Chardonnay. It boasts impressive body and a dash of stem ginger that enlivens the finish. Excellent.
