This vintage saw frost during the spring months, which reduced yields. The Col d'Orcia 2001 Brunello di Montalcino offers robust fruit weight and structured tannins that hold it tightly together. There is a gritty, open-knit quality to its texture, and the finish is layered with dark fruit, spice and tobacco.

The estate's 2001 Brunello di Montalcino is a full-bodied, supple effort offering ripe dark fruit, earthiness and toasted oak with excellent length, if not much overall complexity. This attractive Brunello will benefit from another year or two of bottle age and should drink well to at least age fifteen. Anticipated maturity

Medium red. Inviting aromas of dried strawberry and raspberry, leather, minerals, loam, nuts and Indian spices; struck me as a bit Rioja-like. Juicy, tangy and focused but a bit hard-edged, with a strong acid spine to the red berry flavors. Gained some texture with aeration, but this is a low-fat version of Brunello. Finishes persistent but on the dry side.

Mid ruby. Hint of chocolate on compost. Relatively light and smooth. The notable acidity. Rather a slack version of Brunello – though there’s nothing wrong with it. Nothing terrifically exciting either. Quite a bit of astringency on the finish. (JR)
