This is the best showing yet for Latour's 2021 Pauillac. Intensely perfumed, the 2021 has gained weight and body since I last tasted it. Crushed flowers, black pepper, leather and dried herbs are just starting to open in the bouquet. Dark and rather virile, the Pauillac is super expressive today. The elevated presence of Cabernet Sauvignon comes through loud and clear. Brisk acids and beams of supporting tannin are also quite prominent, largely because the 2021 doesn't have the mid-palate richness of more opulent years.

A strong opening of crushed roses and palma violets, with a touch of cranberry, redcurrant, pink peppercorns. Skilfully choosing to focus on texture and slate-scrape minerality, with soft floral aromatics. High Petit Verdot adds spice and campfire smoke. This is a challenging vintage for a 3rd wine even at the level of Latour, and they are releasing it into an unforgiving market, but there is a lot to enjoy here. 33% new oak for ageing. A ton of firm and beautiful tannins.

The first tasting of this wine outside the château. Tasted blind. Purplish crimson. Interesting, edgy floral notes. Chewy and currently unappealing. Dry finish. Very concentrated and reticent. (JR)
