Rose petals and raw beef. Very, very, very tight. Needs lots of time – it's presenting a resolutely stony face. Like mining mithril out of mountains? The power is evident but it's more pain than pleasure at the moment. (TC)

Becker's 2019 Pfalz Pinot Noir "Sankt Paul" VDP. Grosse Lage is deep and intense yet still untamed and leathery on the nose that indicates ripe cherry fruit. On the palate, this is a ripe, fresh and elegant, enormously vital and tensioned Pinot with a very long, structured, tensioned and saline finish. This is Pinot on another level, and its power is uplifted by the chalky tension. Impressive Pinot Noir from Schweigen. 13.5% stated alcohol. Tasted in Wiesbaden, August 2022.
Elegant aromas fill the glass moving between candied red fruit and violets, dark spice and cool ancient earth. Tense and humming with barely disguised power and complexity beneath. Refined chalky tannins and restraint nod toward France while the feet remain firmly planted in Germany. Occasionally the palate heads a bit towards cassis but never quite finds the off ramp. Lean, lithe and impossibly young. (PS)
