Pine, crushed flowers, mint and sweet red berries are some of the scents that emerge from the 2011 Barolo Castellero. Although not particularly expressive of this Monforte site, the 2011 is nevertheless a pretty Barolo. A spine of firm yet nicely balanced tannins gives this mid-weight Barolo its persistence. Saline notes add nuance on the precise finish. The higher altitude of Castellero appears to have been a benefit in 2011. This is very nicely done.

Cherry fruit and a ferrous, earthy aroma on the nose. Firm but not severe tannic feel with a dense, dark finish. Borders on austere at this young stage, but has ample potential to age well. (RH)

The 2011 Barolo Castellero shows a slightly sweet and juicy style with dark fruit tones of Morello cherry and blackberry. Those fruit tones are enhanced by subtle spice notes, licorice and grilled herb. The Castellero cru (in the Barolo township) is known for structured wines with a fine tannic backbone. This expression accurately reflects those characteristics. It should age gracefully for ten years or more.

Barolo. Mid to deep ruby with narrow orange rim. Brooding richness and just a tiny bit stalky. Proper tannic grip framing rich fruit but with a tangy, fresh edge. Lovely chew and balance on the finish, but not nearly ready. (WS)
