Coming from the Rozier, Tupin, and Maison Rouge lieux-dits and all Syrah, the 2023 is a beautiful Côte Rôtie offering red and black fruits and some pepper and floral nuances, intermixed with a subtle bloody, meaty character. It's elegant, medium to full-bodied, pure, layered, and seamless, with ripe tannins. Give it a few years and drink over the following 15 years. Drink 2028-2043. While known for his incredible Gigondas, Luis Barruol also fashions a terrific lineup of Northern Rhônes. In general, the winemaking is similar to his Gigondas, with later pick dates, very little destemming, and aging in larger barrels.

The 2023 Côte-Rôtie assembles 100% whole-cluster grapes from the five different lieux-dits Côte Bodin, Rozier, Semons, But De Mont and Maison Rouge. Pronounced blackberry, fresh violets, smoothly lifted pepper and minty shadings are all pushed forward. Midweight and smooth, the 2023 is a delicious Côte-Rôtie from Louis Barruol, centering the last notes with drive and precision. This narrowly outperforms the 2022 I tasted last year.
The 2023 Côte-Rôtie shows well, displaying intense violets, pencil shaving, dried herbs and peppery traces on its articulate aromatic profile. Built around ripe and sleek tannins, the concentrated 2023 is a distinctively juicy Côte-Rôtie, closing with a zesty slice of blood orange on the complex finish.
