Tasting notes
The aromas here are both intriguing and elusive. As often, a whiff of oiliness seems to live up to the site’s name, and the nose is slightly Chablis-like in its distance from fruit aromas in favor of mineral and animal suggestions. But there are also alluring, faintly musky floral scents, along with nutty intimations of the piquancy that emerges on a seemingly chalk-starched yet subtly creamy palate. Apple and white peach also enter the picture, lusciously delivering primary juiciness. Maritime salinity allied to scallop-like savor serves for saliva-inducement on a mouthwatering finish that strikingly sustains undulating layers of mineral, animal, floral and fruity elements.

The Ölberg is my favourite among the estate’s Erste Lagen, because of its harmonious balance between fruit, herbaceous freshness, acidity and mineral components. Mint and citrus on the nose, grapefruit and melon on the palate, a piquant bite of sorrel on the finish set the highlights and provide a complexity that crosses the borders to Grosses Gewächs level.
