Classic and expressive, the 2018 Syrah is deep ruby in the glass and offers notions of black raspberry, black pepper and cured meats. Medium to full-bodied, the Syrah is focused, balanced and precise, showcasing flavors of summer sausage with plum compote and wild herbs on the mid-palate. The wine continues to evolve, revealing its complexity as it glides to a delightfully lingering finish. Bravo.

The 2018 Syrah contains 90% whole bunch and was matured for 14 months in 15% new oak, used wood and foudre . It has a lively bouquet of brambly red berry fruit, white pepper, clove and cola scents that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. This is quite a sinewy Syrah, grippy in the mouth, revealing hints of licorice and Japanese nori toward the saline finish. Excellent.
About the producer
Chris and Andrea Mullineux were at the forefront of South Africa’s new-wave movement and are now one of the country’s most established names. Alongside the Swartland project that made their name, they make wines in Franschhoek under the Leeu Passant name – a tribute to South Africa’s vinous past.
