This dense, richly-textured wine possesses staggering richness and elegance along with breathtaking clarity and precision. Notes of leather, smoke, tar and licorice linger on the long, intense finish.

I am not sure I possess the vocabulary to do these majestic wines – the reds in particular – justice. Simply put, Castello di Ama’s 2006s are spectacular and every bit as magnificent as they were when I tasted them late that year. Simply put, this is a profound set of new releases from Marco and Lorenza Pallanti. Explosive and potent, the 2006 Chianti Classico Vigneto La Casuccia certainly makes an impression. At nearly twenty years of age, it remains vibrant and even a bit austere. Red cherry/plum fruit, blood orange, spice and tobacco lend nuance, but I am most drawn to the wine's energy. The 2006 is showing so well today.

Castello di Ama is one of the pre-eminent estates in Chianti Classico. Situated in the southern-most district of the appellation, the estate has only been making wine since the late 1970s but has since built a reputation as one of the region’s best.
