The 2010 Pinot Nero Barthenau Vigna S. Urbano seduces with its wild florals, brown spices and black raspberry fruits. It’s soft and enveloping, yet packed full of tension, as a combination of tart wild berries and minerals saturate the palate, all balanced by bright acids. This leaves a staining of concentration, along with sweet tannins, while finishing with persistence. The 2010 is still maturing in bottle and has a brilliant future ahead of it.

From a good vintage and a single vineyard on the cooler side. They have been growing Pinot Noir for a century and making this single-vineyard Pinot Noir since 1987. Mid garnet with subtle shading. Light, fresh nose. Tobacco-leaf note. Very racy, chiselled fruit with quite a charge of tannin still. Quite ambitious. Long and neat. (JR)
The gorgeous 2010 Alto Adige Pinot Nero Barthenau Vigna S. Urbano shows an elegant and elaborately dressed up interpretation of the delicate Pinot Nero grape (aged in barrique). This is a wine with huge aromatic intensity that peels off layer after layer to reveal small berry, dried cassis, honey-coated almond, grapefruit zest, tar, dark spice and pressed violets. This wonderful wine manages to be both elegant and powerful at the same time. You could drink it now or wait a few years more.
