Score 96/100 · Drink 2014-2029, Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, Dec 2012

The 2009 Syrah Eisele Vineyard stands out for its textural elegance and finesse. Dark berries, flowers and mint are some of the many nuances that come together in this silky, totally captivating wine. The 2009 has never been the most varietally expressive Syrah from the Eisele Vineyard, but it is exceptionally polished, sexy and pure. Sweet floral notes add lift and a measure of brightness on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. This is a gorgeous set of wines from Bart and Daphne Araujo, and their team headed by winemaker Nigel Kinsman and consulting winemaker Francoise Peschon. In particular, the 2010s are knockouts. I won’t be surprised if one day 2010 is considered one of the great all-time vintages at this historic property. Saturated medium ruby. Tight but nuanced nose hints at cassis, cocoa powder, licorice pastille, spices and gunflint. Dense, rich and savory, with dark berry and chocolate flavors dominating the palate. Finishes with big, ripe tannins and a lingering saline quality. I missed the floral lift that this wine can show in the cooler years.

Good full ruby. Blackberry, black raspberry, licorice pastille and gunflint on the nose. Densely packed, inky and extremely backward, with an impressive thickness of texture to its dark berry flavors. Finishes with powerful tannic spine and a lingering note of bitter chocolate. Much less expressive today than the 2008 but not at all hard.
