The 2017 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba is a tasty, straightforward Barolo to drink over the next decade or so. The 2017 is a bit lighter than most vintages, but that's not a bad thing at all for a wine meant to be enjoyed on the young side. Red cherry fruit, iron, mint, white pepper and chalk all lend complexity.

A nose that takes you to poetry and evening gardens and memories. This is stunning. Cherries pressed into white pepper, raspberries pressed into orange peel, thyme pressed into mandolined oak, rose petals pressed into lime leaves. Long and fragrant, spectacularly beautiful. (TC)

With fruit sourced from throughout this important Barolo subzone, the Luigi Pira 2017 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba shows some ripeness with dried raspberry and sweet cherry. The wine delivers spice, smoke and tilled earth with some of the iron ore or rusty aromas that are so specific to this village in the Barolo appellation. To the palate, it delivers soft tannins and a mid-weight build with all the makings for another fine cut of steak.

The 2017 Barolo Del Comune Di Serralunga D'Alba is brooding with clove, chocolate covered orange, and saddle leather. The palate is fully ripe, with freshness on the back of the palate noted by ripe cherry, tea leaf, and forest floor, and tannins that creep up and make a statement. Drink 2024-2038.
