"S" is for Sciaranuova, a contrade named after its "new lava flow." The 2017 Contrada S shows some nice fruit, cherry in particular, with drying volcanic and ashen tones at the back. Smoke, tar and licorice rise like fumes from the elegant bouquet. There is a note of white pepper as well that you get in some Etna reds, especially old vines of Nerello Mascalese with a tiny bit of Nerello Cappuccio planted within. Production of this wine is 2,450 bottles.

Cask sample. Mid crimson. Concentrated cherry and hints of marzipan and morello cherry. Seems a little oxidative (apple peel), but this is a cask sample, hence it may be a little out of condition. Succulent, sweet cherry fruit with bags of tannins. Has plenty of everything: fruit, tannins and acidity (that may still be going through malo). (WS)

Tenuta di Passopisciaro is the Etna estate owned by Andrea Franchetti, one of Italy’s pioneering winemakers who founded the Super Tuscan estate Tenuta di Trinoro, before becoming instrumental in Mount Etna’s wine renaissance with his Passopisciaro estate.
