Tasting notes
Good full red. Plum, tobacco and clove on the nose. Round and sweet on entry, with plum and tobacco flavors dominating. Then broad but backward on the dry finish, which features building tannins and a strong spice character. Today I don't find this cru's typical bright, minty acidity. A bit warm on the back (all of these 2007s are carrying alcohol of 14.5% or more).

The 2007 Barbaresco Riserva Paje comes across as a bit simple in this vintage. It shows good fleshiness and lovely inner sweetness in a fairly approachable style. I don't see the pedigree of the finest 2007 Riservas here. In exchange, though, readers will find a highly attractive, forward Barbaresco that will drink well right out of the gate.

Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. The 2007 Riservas saw a lengthy period of four or more weeks on the skins. The wines spent a total of three years in oak, the first year in 25-35 HL casks, an additional 12-18 months in larger 50-75 HL casks, and a final 6-12 months back in the smaller casks. When the 2007 Riservas were younger, the personality of the vintage was quite apparent, but as the wines have aged the site specificity of these great vineyards has begun to emerge. The 2007 Riservas are big wines that should drink well upon release, but they also appear to have enough structure to develop beautifully in the cellar. Importer: Vias Imports, New York, NY; tel.
