The 1998 Siran repeats the performance of a couple of years back, the particular vintage under the consultancy of Michel Rolland. Lush blackberry and briary aromas, that hint of clove that I remarked upon in previous notes, it offers Rolland’s typical riper take on the vintage and here it works well. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannin and fine acidity. There is commendable density and presence although it clearly lacks finesse and detail. It is just a thoroughly enjoyable Margaux. Tasted at the vertical retrospective at Château Siran.

Tasted at the vertical held at the property, the 1998 Château Siran is totally different to how the wine tasted just after bottling. Now approaching adulthood, this belnd of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 12% Petit Verdot has a fresh and clean bouquet, with blackberry and briary scents, a touch of allspice and clove - quite detailed and vibrant. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry, a keen thread of acidity, quite ferrous in style and tapering in just a touch towards the finish. This is a perfectly decent, upstanding 1998 Margaux, although I noticed that it does lose a bit of vivacity in the glass, so I would not decant this for too long. Tasted February 2016.
About the producer
In the south of Margaux, this property has 36 hectares of vines. There’s an unusually large proportion of Petit Verdot (13%) in the vineyard, something which the team feels adds finesse, concentration and a spicy finish to the wine.
